SHANTOU UNIVERSITY (STU)

Since its early years, Shantou University has benefited from strong and consistent support from the internationally respected philanthropist and business leader Mr. Li Ka-shing. Through the Li Ka Shing Foundation, substantial financial assistance amounting to HK$8 billion was allocated up to 2018 to support the long-term development of Shantou University, including the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. This enduring support reflects deep global confidence in the university’s vision, governance, and academic direction.

Guided by the educational philosophy of “Building Oneself for the Pursuit of Selflessness,” Shantou University (STU) is committed to delivering student-centered education. The university actively pursues reforms in governance, curriculum design, and talent development. A major future plan includes relocating the Medical College to the main campus and developing a globally advanced curriculum with a strong focus on life sciences. Since 2001, STU has implemented internationalization-oriented reforms, recruiting overseas experts to serve in senior leadership roles. Through continuous improvements in teaching methods, resource management, and human resource systems, STU has become a model for higher education reform in China.

About Shantou University Medical College (SUMC)

Shantou University Medical College (SUMC) is a core academic unit of Shantou University and a major destination for international students pursuing MBBS in China. SUMC follows a student-centered approach to medical education, a patient-centered approach to healthcare, and an application-oriented approach to biomedical and clinical research. Guided by values of innovation, dedication, and professional excellence, SUMC continuously strengthens its education, research, and healthcare services in line with international medical standards.

SUMC Campus

Currently, SUMC operates across two campuses: the original medical campus located in the historic center of Shantou city and a modern campus shared with the main university campus in the northeastern suburbs. Plans are underway to relocate the entire Medical College to the main campus, creating an integrated, multidisciplinary life sciences center.

A world-renowned architectural firm has been commissioned to design the new campus. With support from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, the project aims to build an innovative learning environment that blends nature, creativity, and modern education, supporting students pursuing MBBS in China.

About Shantou City

Shantou is a coastal city in China’s southeastern Guangdong Province, with a population of approximately five million. Located along the South China Sea and close to Taiwan, the city is part of the Chaoshan metropolitan region and is conveniently connected to major cities such as Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, and Hong Kong.
